Journalists for Change: Environmental Problems in the Black Sea Region in Times of War

The FES Regional Office “Dialogue Eastern Europe” is pleased to invite journalists, bloggers and media activists from the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries to participate in our upcoming seminar on Environmental Problems in the Black Sea Region in Times of War.

The seminar will take place on June 26-28, 2023 in Batumi, Georgia.

Environmental challenges have been an issue for the Black Sea Region over the years, ranging from pollution to overfishing, losing biodiversity, destruction of habitats and many more. The ongoing conflicts and wars have made the situation even worse. The environmental impact of these wars, albeit often neglected, can have severe ecological, environmental, and socio-economic consequences. Since the summer of 2022, reports of thousands of dolphins dying as a direct result of mine explosions in the Black Sea have been accumulating. And this is just one of the most obvious examples: There are many more stories which show that it is evident that armed conflicts and environmental issues are closely intertwined.

During our 3-day seminar, we want to take on the opportunity to explore the environmental impact of armed conflicts in the Black Sea Region with a focus on the role of journalists in raising awareness and promoting sustainable solutions. Distinguished experts in the field and guest speakers will contribute by sharing their experience and in-depth knowledge of the topic. We will examine the issue at hand providing the participants with valuable insights and tools to enhance reporting on environmental issues during war times.

As a political foundation committed to the values of Social Democracy and strongly believing in the need for a socio-ecological transformation, we very much value the work of environmental journalists and of journalists which cover environmental and social topics in their everyday reporting. We are thus glad to offer this opportunity to them and encourage them to apply. The seminar will provide the participants with a unique opportunity to network with fellow journalists, exchange ideas, and learn from each other’s experiences.
